U.S. researchers from the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University of Colorado released a study indicating that Arctic sea ice is decreasing at faster rate than what is currently being predicted by the computer models of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The study Arctic Sea Ice Decline: Faster Than Forecast (released April/30) indicated that the summer extent of the sea ice retreat is about 30 years ahead of the computer models. It should be noted that once the integrity of the summertime extent of the Arctic polar ice mass is compromised drastic and accelerated changes will occur to the global environmental landscape. This notion is attributed to the reflectivity benefits of solar radiation the snow/sea ice matrix of the polar ice mass provides to the Earth as a whole.
