Northern concern

Western Canadian premiers have been attending a conference in Iqaluit (Canadian territory of Nunavut) since Wednesday to discuss common issues facing their respected regions.  Issues surrounding the North and predominately the effects of climate change as it relates to social and economic concerns have come to the forefront of discussion.  With an estimation of one-quarter of the world’s remaining undiscovered energy lying beneath the Arctic Ocean and Yellowknife accounting for the greatest GDP per capita in the world — attributed to the tremendous growth in the diamond industry; this provides a real-life example to push the federal government to increase its security presence in the Canadian North.  These concerns come on the heels of speculation that PM Harper will make a formal announcement on Monday to outfit the North with an icebreaker patrol vessel.
