As the various Arctic nations seeking to claim continental-shelf rights to portions of the possibly very lucrative Arctic Ocean seabed continue to amass scientific data to support their respective claim, Russia has noted that it will be filing its claim with the United Nations by year’s end. Russia has the possibility to claim a sizable portion of the Arctic Basin as it’s believed that the Lomonosov Ridge (underwater mountain range) is an extension of the Siberian continental shelf. Russia made an original claim to the UN’s Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2001, it was recommended by the Commission that Russia provided further research on the matter.
