Artifical island

Monday, December 24th, 2007

An American independent oil company is set to begin extracting oil from the Beaufort Sea in the next couple of weeks.  The unique venture is based on the fact that the development is set on an artificial island located approximately three miles off shore in the region of the already developed Alaskan North Slope.  Construction of the island began in the winter of 2006 when ice roads allowed a steady stream of trucks to haul enough gravel to create the six-acre island; a retaining wall was also constructed to prevent the island from eroding.  Additionally, an eight-mile pipeline was constructed to transport the oil from the approximate 90 million barrel offshore oil field to the coastline and then onwards to southern markets.
