Signs of both climate change and the Arctic region reaching a tipping point were observed last week. The largest ice shelf in the Canadian Arctic (Ward Hunt) broke up once again, this time two pieces broke free from the ice shelf, one being approximately 14 square kilometers in size and the other 4 square kilometers and will eventually be transported away into the Arctic Ocean.
Polar scientists believe a lack of newly formed ice to replenish decaying and melting ice has forced a drastic change to the Arctic coastline where the majority of the ice shelves reside. To that end, it is assumed that the dwindling numbers of ice shelves (approximately 5 remain) will never fully recover and provide clear indication to the realities of the changing climate in the Arctic as a result of global warming.
